Of all the arts photography is perhaps the most figurative, the most representational. We trust photographs to record moments, places and people. yet in Gillian Fletcher's work the art is pared back to its core, the capture of light. Context is stripped away.

The photographs were taken in Melbourne, Western Australia and South East Asia, yet they are not obviously images of anything other than light and as such they focus our attention on the photographer’s medium, its texture, its feeling.

At first glance some of these images are disorienting, like plunging into a suddenly darkened room and having to stop & look intently before our eyes have really adjusted. Yet with concentration and stillness something emerges from the darkness.

What we are looking at is not a representation of that which the eye sees. These are images of emergent realities, hovering just below perception.
